Nail care – strengthening nails. Splitting nails.

Strengthening nails

One of the most important parts of nail care is to take the trouble to strengthen them. If you spend a lot of your time in regular contact with household detergents and other cleaners your nails will definitely start to suffer. At first they will develop weak layers and they will become prone to damage such as splitting and brittleness. You might also work around harmful substances as a job and this is an additional source of problems for your nails.

Nail strengthening starts with the prevention of damage. Ideally you should minimize the contact of the hands with powders and detergents. It's quite easy to do . When doing housework get into the habit of wearing household work gloves. First put hand cream on your hands or glycerine. Another good practice is to use cotton gloves to protect your hands, whenever possible. Unlike rubber gloves, you can wear cotton ones for a long time without unsettling your skin .

In order to strengthen your nails you should make sure that your intake of vitamins and trace elements, and of course, calcium combined with vitamin D is carefully observed. Your diet should be enriched with almonds, figs, dates, dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cottage cheese. You should also keep up your intake of fish and red meat for iron, carrot juice for vitamin A and spinach for essential iodine.

Some nutritionists recommend the consumption of gelatin as a way of strengthening your nails. Gelatin has long been recommended as a miracle drug for the health of nails (5 grams per day for a month's course of treatment followed by a repeat course a month later but until now researchers have no conclusive evidence that it is effective.

Strengthening the nails involves nutrition by nail oil or treatment creams for the cuticle. Whilst applying the oil to the nails, you should pay particular attention to the contour of the nail. You should rub the cuticle at the base of the nail in a circular motion with the thumb of the other hand. This action will allow the nail to "breathe".There are products available which work well on the nails to strengthen them. Allantoin and panthenol effectively heal the cuticle, especially after the manicure. Liposomes and nutrients that promote the formation of new cells in the growth zone of nail plate are also important for strengthening the quality of the nails. Also, the cream may contain sulfur amino acids and keratin, proteins and vitamin C to help strengthen nails and improve the nails' resistance to harmful effects of the environment.

Regular massage contributes to nail strengthening . In the area of the cuticle this is done with a very soft brush, pre-lathered with a glycerin based or child's soap . This massage will allow the cuticle to be cleared of dead skin flakes and it will help in preventing the development of unsightly cracks. An especially useful massage is one which incorporates sea salt, which also contains many minerals and iodine in the correct proportions. You need to repeat that 3 times a week. The salt in question should be sea salt , without any aromatic additives. The salt should be dissolved in warm water and you should keep your hands in the solution for 20 minutes. A teaspoon of salt is the right amount. This procedure should be repeated for 10 consecutive days. For prevention of weak nails it is useful to use this a salt bath once a week. A warning!Never use ordinary household sodium chloride salt as this will make the nails softer and defeat the whole object of the work you are trying to accomplish.

Another procedure that can be done by yourself instead of at a beauty salon is a a paraffin compress . This procedure also helps to feed and strengthen nails, improve blood circulation in hands and fingers and promotes the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the cuticles.

At home, you can prepare compresses with a solution of the following : 70 grams of water, 5 grams of alum, 25 grams of glycerol. Also useful is natural olive oil, to which is added a few drops of lemon juice which contains a wide range vitamins valuable for strengthening the nails. This oil treatment can be very effective if carried out 1-2 times a week . Once it has been applied to the nails you should put on cotton gloves and they should be kept on overnight .

Care for splitting nails.

A manicure for splitting nails needs to be done on a regular basis to be most effective .It is recommended not less than once every 2 weeks. To remove nail polish you should strictly avoid acetone. You should also not forget that the nails occasionally need a break from being treated to nail polish, even if it is of the best quality. A routine to keep might be one which allows five days of nail varnishing followed by two days refraining from varnishing the nails. From time to time instead of using nail varnish use nail strengthener which has a remedial effect on the nails . It will protect your nails from the harmful effects of the environment and it will also help to make the delicate and thin nail plates stronger. It looks like a colorless varnish and is also attractive when used. If left on it will also serve as a nutritional basis (2-3 layers), under the nail varnish which you reapply after two days rest. For splitting nails, those varnishes which contain fruit acids are the most suitable.

It is particularly important for those of you with splitting nails to carry out a procedure called "closing".This involves layer after layer application of preparations containing trace elements, vitamins and nutritional proteins. Usually this procedure is done in cosmetic clinics. This prevents the nail plates from drying out or flaking. It strengthens the nails and stimulates and encourages their healthy growth. The nail cream, followed by oil gives the nails shine. This treatment remains active in the nail plate for a period of two weeks. After the treatment the nails do not require a protective lacquer coating of varnish.

A well-known way to quickly bring the nails and hands into good condition is to put a liberal amount of Vaseline on the hands before going to bed . After applying, put cotton gloves on and wear them overnight. This treatment is especially useful in the winter, when the hands and nails dry out more quickly.

Strengthening the thin splitting nails

One of the most popular ways of strengthening nails is to use olive oil as it is extremely rich in various vitamins and trace elements. It can be rubbed into the base of the nail whilst using the warm bath treatment .If you incorporate lemon juice it is even more effective.

You should keep your nails in the bath for 5 minutes .It should contain 2 drops of lemon oil, 2 drops of olibanum , 2 drops of tea tree oil, 2 drops of rose oil, 10 ml of wheat grain oil and 10 ml of jojoba oil.

Do this hand bath once a week containing vegetable oil (preferably corn)to which is 3 drops of iodine.

Do not use metal nail files when filing the nails.

Use nail files with a Teflon-coated surface or with a soft consistency.

If you are filing your nails you should should do so in one direction. If you go from side to side you can easily create micro cracks in your nails.
